2008 H-W GENERALS YOUTH FOOTBALL PRE-SEASON PARENT LETTER

Dear H-W Generals Youth Football Parents:

The 2008 Hamilton-Wenham Youth Football season is getting underway and we’re expecting to have a great turnout again this year!

Football Players are expected to report to camp on Monday, 8/11/08, at 5:30PM at Patton Park.

All practices prior to the first game of the season will be Monday - Friday, 5:30PM – 7:00PM at Patton Park.  Practice days will change to a Tuesday - Friday schedule after our first Game.  More information about our game schedule will be provided prior to the start of the season.

The first week of practice will be focused on conditioning and teaching/re-learning the proper techniques for playing this very challenging and exciting sport. It is important that all players arrive to practice fully dressed and ready to go on time.  Each level of play (A Team 7th & 8th, C Team 5th & 6th, and D Team 3rd & 4th) uses each practice session to teach specific lessons, and we build on those teachings each successive practice.  Showing up late or missing practice altogether just puts the player in a catch-up mode which can be very difficult, especially for first time players.

Here is a list of items our players should be prepared to bring on 8/11/08:

§         Molded Rubber Cleats: Parents must provide properly fitted, “molded rubber or non-removable cleats”. “Screw-ins”, metal or hard plastic cleats are illegal and will not be allowed on the field (break shoes in early to avoid blistering).

§         Mesh Jersey: Large enough to fit over shoulder pads (not supplied by HWGYF)

§         Water Bottle: We will have water bottles, but recommend bringing your own for precautionary health reasons.

§         Medications with instructions: Hand medication with Player’s Name to your child’s coach and we’ll store in MedKits on the field. Each coach has a MedKit.

Cleats and practice jerseys sell out fast so get these items by late June and July!!

The rest of each player’s equipment will be handed out on Fit Day Saturday August 16th. You’ll receive a notice from me Doug Smith (Commissioner/Equipment Mgr.) regarding the time slot your player’s team is expected to be at the Generals Iron Rail Storage facility (Boy Scout Barn) off Grapevine Road in Wenham.  Mouth guards will be given to every player, however, if your child has special orthodontic requirements, we recommend being fitted by your orthodontist for a special mouthpiece. We’d also recommend wearing an athletic cup for their protection as well once contact practices start in August. If you have any questions regarding Equipment issues, please email Doug Smith at dpsmgs@comcast.net.

A Parents-Coaches Meeting will be held at 5:30PM (Date TBA) at the Patton Park Little League field benches to answer any questions you may have.  The Head of Football Coaching Paul Drinkwater and the Head Football Coaches of the “7th & 8th” Team - Chris Ecker, the “5th & 6th” Team – Paul Drinkwater and the “3rd & 4th” Team - TBD, will be on hand to discuss our program’s goals, as well as the challenges, expectations, and rewards our players will experience at each level.

Football is a demanding sport, both mentally and physically, and practices starting in the August heat will require all players to maintain sufficient hydration and fuel supplies to stay focused and alert.  We strongly recommend a balanced diet, proper hydration, and adequate sleep for all of our players in order to keep their energy levels up and to get the most out of each practice session.

Please contact Doug Smith or any of the Head Coaches listed above or visit our website at www.generalsyouthfootball.com and also click on the FAQ link if you need assistance prior to then.  Thank you for your participation in H-W Generals Youth Football and we are looking forward to a great 2008 season!!
