B TEAM - 2006 KITCHEN DIVISION CHAMPIONS WITH BEST OVERALL CAYFL B TEAM RECORD!!! Youth Football - C Team: Battles tough N. Reading in 6-0 loss - The HW Generals C Team played their second game of the season against the North Reading Hornets on Sunday, September 24th at N.Reading High School. The game was very much a hard-fought defensive game, with Cameron Macri making some tough yardage on a couple good plays. Thomas Rostad picked up some yards running up the middle from his QB position, and Ed Chapman did a fine job subbing in his first game as QB for Rostad. The lone score of the game came in the second quarter from North Reading which scored a touchdown on a sweep around the left end. The generals “D” tightened and kept the Hornets out of the endzone stopping their 2-point conversion attempt. The Generals struggled with their snaps on Offense but the Defense rose to the occasion and completely shut down a fast, strong Hornet Offense for the remainder of the game. Players and coaches from both teams shook hands at the end of the game and the N.Reading Coaches complimented the Generals’ teamwork, effort and determination. Individual players making some great tackles from their Defensive positions were Macri (DE), Chase Brown (LB), Nick Spofford (LB), Jack Goeben (DT), Colin Cavanaugh (S), Colin Hubbard (S), Trevor Jones (DT), Sam Dickey (DT), and Mason Craig (CB). The C Team travels on Sunday, 10/1, to face the Lynnfield Pioneers. Coach Craig pointed out that “this game was a great accomplishment for our young C Team since all of the N.Reading players were 4th Graders with superior size and speed, but none of our players ever gave up. Our guys are starting to turn into a real football team and they know what we need to work on next week to get even better.” The Generals Youth Football C Team had their first season opening game at home against Marblehead Sunday, 9/17. This was the first football game for most of the players on this young team consisting of three 4th Graders, twenty 3rd Graders, and one 2nd Grader. The smaller, inexperienced Generals showed a lot of spirit and determination though and the Generals C Team Cheerleaders were there to support their team along with about 60-70 spectators. The Marblehead team dominated the first half scoring three touchdowns and converting on each of their 2-point conversions to lead at the half by a score of 24-0. But the Generals kept their focus on doing the little things right like handling the snap, making their blocks and gang tackling. The Generals did manage to sustain a nice offensive drive capped off by a nifty run by running back Cameron Macri who sprinted around the left side on a sweep and weaved his way through the Marblehead defense 50 yards for the Generals first touchdown of the season. Fullback Chase Brown then took the handoff from QB Thomas Rostad and rumbled in for the 2-point conversion behind the blocking of Jack Goeben and Bryce Finley. The scoring sparked a mini-celebration in the endzone and inspired the defense to hold Marblehead’s offense to a hard-fought touchdown and 2-point conversion in the entire second half. Making some great tackles on defense were Brown, Hunter Smith, Mason Craig, Collin Hubbard, Jack Wosepka, and Ed Chapman. As time was winding down in the fourth quarter, the offense opened up hole in the Marblehead defense allowing Brown to bang his way up the field for a 40-yard gain but Brown came up short as a defender managed to catch him from behind right as time ran out on the clock. The young players did a great job in their first game and are looking forward to their next game on 9/24 at North Reading. (reported by Stephanie Fales) Hamilton Wenham vs. Ipswich B-Team Game Report Nov 11, 2006 Game Report Coming off a big win against Lynnfield last week, the Hamilton Wenham Generals (HWG) came into the final game of the season needing a win to clinch the “Kitchin” division and secure the top spot in the Cape Ann League. Playing at home, the HWG knew that arch rivals Ipswich Tigers (IPS) would enjoy nothing more than to play spoilers. On an unusually warm sunny afternoon in mid November Generals captains Trevor Lyons, RJ Pizzano, Jimmy McLellan, Brad Kimball, Ben Kozlowski and Matt Vogus won the toss. On the 4th play from scrimmage Lyons ran the sweep to perfection following key blocks from Marc Pauwels and Stephen Brao…. Lyons converted the two point play and HWG took the early lead by a score of 8-0. IPS returned the ball effectively on ensuing kick off by Kozlowski, but Lyons leaped from behind and made a touchdown saving tackle inside the 25 yard line. A pumped up HWG defense that gave up only 6 points on the previous two games, showed they weren’t ready to give up any quick points today as McLellan and Pizzano came up with two bone crushing hits for consecutive losses, IPS fumbled snap on 4th down forcing a change of possession. As the 2nd quarter started, our cheerleaders were singing “Be Aggressive” and James Burr, Kyle Craig, Lyons and Pizzano took note moving the ball with punishing runs inside the 10 yard line. Lyons scored on the sweep with under 5 minutes left in the half. The conversion was unsuccessful but the Generals led at the 14-0. The 3rd quarter began with a deep kick off from Kozlowski. Defense lineman Peter Duval made a superb one handed tackle grabbing the IPS QB’s jersey and spinning him around for a 6 yard loss. Christian Ecker, Tristan Smith and Brao followed with effective gang tackled forcing a change of possession. The offense stumbled a bit in the second half with multiple holding penalties and good defensive stops by the IPS defense. The 4th quarter saw the first punt from Kimball and even tougher HWG defense led by Ian Dickey and Blake Denham who continually harassed the IPS backfield. Linebackers Pizzano, Ecker and Smith continually stuffed the run and safety’s Lyons, Pauwels and Burr sealed the ends effectively in the final minutes of the game. If defense win championships it can be said that the Generals defense won the league with superb defense shutting their opponents out the last two weeks and never giving up more than 14 points all season. Congratulations to Generals Youth Football B team for finishing the season 6 wins 1 loss and 2 ties number 1 in the Cape Ann League. Post-Game Comments: Coach Chris Ecker commented: “We are very proud of the how the boys played all season…you could really see the improvement on the offense and defense side of the ball from week to week and it really paid off… I want to thank all of the coaches, cheerleaders, volunteers and parents for taking the time to helping us make this a season to remember” Prepared by E. Pauwels Hamilton Wenham vs. Lynnfield B-Team Game Report - Nov 5, 2006 Game Report After containing Amesbury’s potent offense last week to just 6 points, the Generals came into this week’s game confident with their new defense look. This game featured the two Cape Ann B-Team division leaders, “Kitchin” division Hamilton Wenham Generals (HWG) against “Walsh” division leaders Lynnfield Pioneers (LFP). On a clear sunny afternoon, the Generals traveled to Lynnfield where captains Peter Duval, Jimmy McLellan, Brad Kimball, Stephen Brao and Matt Vogus won the toss taking the field on offense all fired up. Unlike last week however, LFP’s big-physical defensive line stuffed the run on the first three consecutive plays from scrimmage showing why they were division leaders, forcing Brad Kimball to punt the ball. A stingy HWG defense showed that size doesn’t matter as RJ Pizzano, Stephen Brao and Peter Duval quickly pursued and gang tackled LFP running backs for a 10 yard loss and forcing a quick 3 and out. In the 2nd quarter, the Generals took over on offense following a short punt and mixed up the running plays. But LFP’s sizable defensive line limited any big gains. On each attempted fourth down runs Trevor Lyons, Christian Ecker and RJ Pizzano pushed the ball inside the 10 yard line. The next play from scrimmage, Trevor Lyons shot through the left side following blockers Jimmy McLellan and Steven Brao scoring the games first touchdown. The two point conversion was unsuccessful but HWG took an early lead 6-0. Following the ensuing kick-off by Ben Kozlowski, the HWG defense line led by Blake Denman, Brad Kimball again pushed back LFP’s running backs on two consecutive plays for losses and a deflected pass by Kyle Craig forced another punt. The very next play created considerable controversy… what looked like a blocked/botched punt was return by Brad Kimball for a 37 yard touchdown; unfortunately this lineman’s dream touchdown was reversed by the officials but the Generals offense still took over on offense and despite running ball more effectively and completing a nice pass to James Burr inside the 15 yard line, time ran out in the half with score remaining 6-0. The 3rd quarter began as the pack chanted “ooh-ooh-ooh” just before they took the field. After another deep kick off from Ben Kozlowski, the hard hitting HWG linebackers Tristan Smith and RJ Pizzano were in hot pursuit LFP’s running game punishing the running back every time he went wide. Brad Kimball and Ian Dickey also came up big sacking the QB for a 10 yard loss forcing another punt. The HWG offense misfired on the next few plays after recovering their own fumble and a holding penalty pushed them back. However, the theme of the day was converting fourth down runs and both Trevor Lyons and Kyle Craig delivered, pushing the ball to the 16 yard line with less than 3 minutes in the quarter. Trevor Lyons sealed the deal with hard run off tackle followed by a two point conversion. The 4th quarter forced the LFP offense into passing; however Ian Dickey, Trevor Lyons, James Burr, Aiden Prior and Marc Pauwels continually knocked down, deflected and almost intercepted long passes. On this day none of the 12 passes attempted by the LFP quarterback were completed. Late in the game Ian Dickey and Matt Vogus pressured and/or sacked the quarterback late in the game giving the ball back to the offense. Trevor Lyons kneed the ball on the last play of the game giving the General’s their 5th win game of the season. The HWG defense played superbly shutting the run and pass down all day as Lynnfield never threatened to score. The offense converted fourth down runs consistently (5 for 5 on the day). The Generals are now 5-1-2 catapulting them to the best B-Team record in the Cape Ann League! Post-Game Comments: Coach Ecker highlighted: “We played our best defense of the season the last two weeks thanks to Coach Brao’s, new simplified defense formation consisting of stunts and rovers… we keyed in on the right LFP offensive players today, our line-backers and defensive backs played extremely well containing the backfield and sealing off the ends and knocking down passes all day… were looking forward to bringing this pursing defense against rivals Ipswich next week.” Prepared by E. Pauwels Hamilton Wenham vs. Amesbury - B-Team Game Report - October 29, 2006 After a tough loss the previous week to Marblehead, the Hamilton Wenham Generals (HWG) needed to bounce back against the division leading Amesbury Jets (ABJ). Three players Steve Turpin, TJ Smith and Lucas Prioli were called up from JVB to join the help the Generals this Sunday. On a windy day more suitable for kite flying than football, the Generals needed to bring their “A game” against the leagues best offensive. The Generals won the toss and immediately ran the wedge up the middle to perfection. On the third play from scrimmage, running back Trevor Lyons got great blocks from Brad Kimball, Matt Vogus and Marc Pauwels sweeping right and cutting back to the inside for a 45 yard touchdown, quickly stunning the ABJ defense. The two point conversion was unsuccessful but HWG took an early lead 6-0. Following the ensuing kick-off by Ben Kozlowski, the HWG defense line led by Jimmy McLellan, Brad Kimball, Peter Duval and Steven Brao pushed back the ABJ running backs on three consecutive plays for 10 yard losses signaling that they were ready for anything the ABJ offense was dishing out. After quick 3 and out, ABJ punted the ball and with less than 3 minutes left in the first quarter, the HWG offense moved the ball from midfield to the 28 yard line. On 4th and 8, Trevor Lyons quarterback attempted a long pass to Marc Pauwels which was harmlessly intercepted by ABJ as the General’s contained the defensive back and made the tackle deep in ABJ territory. The HWG defense took over and once again shut down the ABJ offense on three straight plays forcing a punt. On the very next play from scrimmage, Trevor Lyons ran the sweep to perfection and scored on a 35 yard touchdown. After the missed conversion the HWG led by a score of 12-0. The fist play of the second quarter began with Ben Kozlowski’s kick off and one play later the defense was caught off guard with a ABJ quarterback sweep for 55 yards and their first touchdown. ABJ pass fell short and so did the two point conversion but they closed the gap HWG 12 ABJ 6. Steve Turpin showed why he was called up from JVB and on special teams, quickly made a big impression by returning the ensuing ABJ kick-off more than 20 yards giving the Generals excellent field position. Would lighting strike a third time? Having been burned on two consecutive sweeps the ABJ defensive backs were guarding the corners very tightly, but the HWG unpredictable offense ran the next play to Trevor Lyons up the middle for 58 yards, Lyons shook off three tackles on the longest TD run from scrimmage this year and also made the two point conversion shocking the ABJ defense. Tough HWG linebackers Tristan Smith and RJ Pizzano made big tackles and defensive end Ian Dickey contained ABJ’s mobile quarterback making important TD saving tackles. One last quick pass by ABJ’s quarterback into the end zone was double teamed nicely by Marc Pauwels and Trevor Lyons as the half ended with Generals up by the score of 20-6. The third quarter was all about HWG gang tackling defense… Christian Ecker, Brad Kimball, Tristan Smith, Matt Vogus, and RJ Pizzano smothered all of ABJ’s razzle-dazzle and trick play-passes leading to 15 yards losses. The Generals offense shared the running game with Christian Ecker and were not disappointed following a 35 yard run off right tackle inside the five yard line. Two plays later the Generals scored their third touchdown and converted the extra two points extending the lead to 28-6. With the General’s commanding lead in the fourth quarter, the ABJ offense was forced into long passes and trick plays but the defense controlled the line and slowed the play of the game. With less than two minutes in the game the ABJ offense was stuffed on 4th and goal with TD saving tackles by Tristan Smith, Peter Duval, Aiden Prior and Blake Denman. The HWG took over the ball with less than 2 minutes left and smart running by Kyle Craig moved the ball to midfield as time expired giving the Generals their fourth win of the season. On this day the HWG offense had their most productive day on offense and never had to use their reliable punter Brad Kimball. On defense they contained the leagues most potent passing attack by allowing just 6 points giving the Generals the outright lead in their division with a 4-1-2 record, jumping ahead of ABJ in the standings by one point. On a day with 50 mile an hour wind gust the Hamilton-Wenham A, B and C youth football teams blew away Amesbury by winning each of their respective games. Post-Game Comments: Coach Ecker highlighted: “This week, we practiced a new rover defense in anticipation of the Amesbury’s trick play offense and our boys really pursued the quarterback and running backs relentlessly.” “We took away the outside corners and with the exception of one play we really sealed the ends forcing ABJ into 3rd and long plays consistently…our boys played a team with the best record in our division but on today we won this game on both sides of the ball…I knew that we had to work hard to bounce back after last week loss to Marblehead, these boys have short memories because they came out to play today… this really give us a boost in confidence as we face another big test next week at Lynnfield.” Prepared by E. Pauwels Hamilton Wenham vs. Masconomet - B-Team Game Report October 15, 2006 On the first home game of the season the undefeated Hamilton Wenham Generals (HWG) were ready to take on the Masconomet Chieftains (MASCO). Under a clear blue sunny sky HWG Captains Trevor Lyons, RJ Pizzano, Jimmy McLellan, Brad Kimball, Ben Kozlowski and Matt Vogus met with MASCO at midfield pumped up and ready to go…the Generals won the coin toss and began executing the single wing to perfection, running backs Trevor Lyons, Christian Ecker and RJ Pizzano began the 1st quarter grinding out tough yards against MASCO’s defense… After driving it up the middle on three consecutive plays, the offense drew MASCO’s defense offside and two plays later Trevor Lyons completed a 15-yard run off the left side for HWG’s first touchdown. The General’s missed the two-point conversion but took the early 6-0 lead. MASCO took the ball over on offensive and immediately went to their bread and butter play… two counter runs later they scored on a long 40-yard sweep around the left side. MASCO picked up two extra points and the lead on a quick pass, the score was MASCO- 8 HWG- 6. After the ensuing kickoff HWG’s threw a quick pass to Marc Pauwels for a short gain but the offense was slowed down by a holding penalty and a long dropped pass. Dark clouds and a cold breeze quickly rolled in for the 2nd quarter but that didn’t cool down punter Brad Kimball who boomed the ball inside the 20-yard line. HWG’s gang tackle defense heated up with Blake Denman, Steven Brao, Tristan Smith, Peter Duval and Ian Dickey dog piling on top of MASCO’s running backs. HWG’s took over on offense with 1 minute 53 seconds left in the half… running backs Trevor Lyons and Kyle Craig ran the ball hard up the middle behind the wedge moving the ball inside the 15-yard line but with no time outs remaining the General’s couldn’t get another play off and time ran out. At the end of a well-played half, MASCO led by a score of 8-6. Following a big kick from Ben Kozlowski, MASCO’s offense took over the ball on the 20-yard line to start the 3rd quarter and after two plays from scrimmage ran the counter running play again to perfection scoring on a 65-yard sweep. The score dampened HWG enthusiasm only temporarily as the defense came up with a huge play stopping the two-point conversion… MASCO extended their lead to 14-6. As the weather conditions got colder in the stands, both team were heating up for a real battle on the field, thanks to punter Brad Kimball’s continued long punts, MASCO’s offense kept getting pushed back deep inside the 20-yard line. In the 4th quarter HWG continued to pound the ball inside with strong running up the middle by Christian Ecker… just as MASCO’s defense was expecting more punishing runs the big play of the game came when General’s QB Trevor Lyons faked the run and threw a long pass completion to James Burr for more than 45 yards to just inside the 2 yard line. Christian Ecker followed on the very next play with a touchdown run. This shifted the momentum considerably and with less than 8 minutes left in the game the General’s coaching staff called a quick time out sensing the importance of the next play. The offense came up big with Trevor Lyons running the ball behind the wedge for the critical two point conversion to tie the score 14-14. MASCO’s offense took the ball at the 50 yard line and stayed with the counter run but this time the HWG defense held their own with a big game changing turnover by Blake Denman and RJ Pizzano tackling recovered a MASCO fumble the with less than 4 minutes to play. MASCO’s offense pushed ahead one last time but Jimmy McLellan made a game saving tackle with 17 seconds left as time expired on the clock. The HWG’s ran off the field chanting “ooh-ooh-ooh” and on this day of the season remain undefeated… the final score HWG –14 MASCO -14 Post-Game Comments: Coach Ecker explained: “There were some dramatic swings in the game today… MASCO was the most disciplined and well coached team we’ve played to date, they ran the counter almost to perfection, but it was our kids that got themselves back into the game with big offensive and defensive plays in the second half.” “ We played our usual style of football burning the clock and controlling the ball even though MASCO was bigger... these boys should be proud of the way they played, the score may have been tied but we all felt like winners today!” Coach Dickey said: “ The big play that changed the momentum of the game was the long pass to James Burr, after running the wedge so successfully, we fooled their secondary and made the longest pass from scrimmage this year… also Trevor came through like he has all season with a big two point conversion that really shocked the Masco defense.” Prepared by E. Pauwels Hamilton Wenham (HW) vs. Pentucket (PT) Oct 8, 2006 Game Report: The Hamilton-Wenham (HW) Generals - B team prepared all week for a key match up against Pentucket (PT). The Generals would have their hands full knowing PT had consecutively shut out Winthrop and North Reading the last two weeks. On a warm sunny autumn afternoon rich with bright colored foliage, Captains RJ Pizzano, Aiden Prior and Matt Vogus greeted PT at midfield for the coin toss. The game started with a booming kick by new HW kicker Brad Kimball. PT took over at the 35 yard line and moved the ball steadily on each play consuming most of the time in the first quarter. Two big reverse plays and a face mask penalty advanced the ball inside the 15 yard line. Just when it looked liked PT would score the HW defense bore down with authority. Four hard consecutive tackles from Jimmy McLellan, RJ Pizzano, Tristan Smith and Trevor Lyons gave the ball back to the General’s, stunning the PT offensive and setting the tone early that the HW defensive was not about to give up anything easy. HW took the ball over deep inside the 15 yard line and ran the ball to midfield as the 1st quarter ended. The 2nd quarter began with a long punt by Brad Kimball for more than 30 yards. The PT offensive tried to run the ball inside and met with HW’s gang tackling style defense led by Trevor Lyons, Ian Dickey, Tristan Smith and Steven Brao. After a good PT punt, HW took over on offense but immediately turned the ball over on a fumble putting the pressure right back on its defense inside the 35 yard line. But on this day the defense was up to the challenge, Christian Ecker came up with a big TD saving tackle on 4th and 3 to stop PT once again. With less than a minute to play in the half HW moved the ball quickly to midfield but had to give the ball back after a long 4th down pass attempt to Marc Pauwels was deflected by the PT defensive. With 14 seconds left in the half PT’s pass was intercepted by defensive lineman Peter Duval who broke for the goal line but was tackled at the last second as the half ended. With the big interception in hand, HW’s went into the half pump up and excited about their chances to pull off an upset…the score at the half HW-0 PT-0 The Generals came out in the 3rd quarter confident they could score. Center Peter Duval continued to snap the ball crisply to the HW backs in the single wing. Running back RJ Pizzano powered his way for a 20 yard run breaking tackle after tackle and finally dragging three PT players with him to the 19 yard line. On the next play, Trevor Lyons ran the ball wide to the left side shaking off two PT defenders scampering into the end zone completing an impressive 65 yard drive for HW’s first touchdown of the game. James Burr ran off right tackle for a critical 2 point conversion. The score after the 3rd quarter... HW-8 PT-0. The 4th quarter began with a big 15 yard QB sack by Ian Dickey. Just as it looked like the General’s had the PT offense backed up, they roared right back on 4th down and 15 with a sweep to the left side culminating in 35 yard touchdown. It would be the only mistake the defense would make as the Generals prepared to defend the two point conversion. The Generals knew stopping this play could possibly determine the outcome of this low scoring game. With less than 3 minutes PT gave the ball to their best running back hoping to tie the score, but Brad Kimball was able to reach out with one hand and grab PT’s best player wrestling him to the ground just inside the 1 yard line. The score was HW-8 PT-6. The last 3 minutes of the game was dominated by the HW offensive as they picked up two key first down runs on 3rd and 5 with RJ Pizzano and Kyle Craig diving just ahead of the 1st down marker. Time expired and the HW Generals B team continued their win ways by defeating an outstanding opponent in PT. The final score…HW-8 PT-6. Post-Game Comments: Coach Ecker said: “This was the best team we played all year and the defense rose to the occasion in a big way… we simply out hit ‘em.” “Our confidence showed on the field and in the final score, but we cant’ be too over confident, we have to prepare diligently for Masco next week… We’ve learned a lot this week and I know we’ll be ready for the challenge” Coach Brao commented: “I’m astonished at how tenacious the 5th graders play against our opponents that have older and bigger kids week after week. These boys came out and played confidently and made big plays when we needed it most…. character wins games and we showed more character than in any previous game…we’re for real” Prepared by E. Pauwels Hamilton Wenham vs. Newburyport October 1, 2006 Game Report: Sundays’ game can be described as wet and wild. Hamilton-Wenham (HW) Generals - B team took their undefeated record to Newburyport (NP) and despite NP’s record, none of the players and coaches took this game for granted. The first quarter started quickly for HW, on the second play from scrimmage Generals tailback Trevor Lyons stunned the NP defense by running off right tackle for 54 yards and HW’s first touchdown. The Generals missed the two point conversion but still took the early lead 6-0. Following a strong HW kick off by Ben Kozlowski to the 30 yard line, the defense held NP and forced a quick three and out with strong defensive tackles from Tristan Smith, Steven Brao and a big tackle from Brad Kimball for a 12 yard loss. HW took the ball over at mid-field and both Trevor Lyons and James Burr ran the ball to the 15 yard line just as the first quarter ended. The second quarter began just like the first with a quick score from Trevor Lyons off right tackle and great blocks from Ian Dickey, Ben Kozlowski and Brad Kimball. The Generals made the two point conversion with a quick pass to Flanker Marc Pauwels who eluded two NP tacklers and scampered into the end zone boosting HW lead 14-0. On the ensuing kick-off, NP quickly struck back with a long 65 yard kick-off return for touchdown. The two point conversion was stuffed by Brad Kimball and NP got on the scoreboard 14-6. The remaining 5 minutes of the second quarter went back and forth with Kyle Craig, Christian Ecker breaking open big runs for 15 yards each, however a penalty and lost fumble thwarted any chances of scoring before the end of the half…the Generals went into half time with a 14-6 lead. Co-captions Kyle Craig, Matt Vogus and Peter Duval went to midfield confident about their chances in the second half. After the kick-off, the HW defense led by Tristan Smith who up to that point had 6 tackles in the game and Blake Denman immediately responded by stopping the NP run on three consecutive plays. The Generals took the ball back and proceed with an impressive drive with back to back long runs from running backs Trevor Lyons and Christian Ecker to move the ball inside the 10 yard line. On 2nd and goal, Trevor Lyons scampered into the end zone from the 8 yard line with less than 1 minute left in the 3rd quarter. Kyle Craig ran it up the middle for the two point conversion and the Generals increased the lead 22-6. Despite a commanding lead in the 4th quarter NP were not about to go down easily. Despite two good tackles from Aiden Prior, NP ran the sweep effectively on two consecutive plays and the HW defensive gave up the second TD of the afternoon followed by the two point conversion closing the gap to 22-14. The Generals controlled the ball in the final minutes of the game driving the ball but were stopped on a 4th and 2 yard run. The defense took over and would not break showing why they were undefeated so far. On three consecutive sweeps by NP, James Burr, Brad Kimball and RJ Pizzano stopped the play as time expired on the clock. The final score was HW 22 NP 14. Post-Game Comments: Coach Ecker said: “I’m pleased with the way our boys played today. All of the kids were involved in the game and contributed to the win. We really sealed the ends and limited NP’s running game. We spread the ball around and saw contributions on both sides of the ball from everyone.” Coach Burr highlighted: “The players are really beginning to understand their roles and responsibilities on the field. They came ready to play and executed the game plan really well today.” Kerri Wilson, who leads 23 girls on the HW B Cheerleading team said, “I really like working with these girls, they have learned so much since we started our routines in late August and they have led songs for the offensive or defense even on these rainy days, they enjoy coming out and supporting the team.” Some of the girl’s highlighted their favorite songs… Rae Sanchez says her favorite is “Keep It Up”, Catherine Ecker loves “We’re the Generals”, Megan Sedgwick likes “Supreme” and Mackenzie Wilson thinks “General’s Got The Move” is the best cheer of them all. Despite a steady rain that never stopped the Generals - B team had all the right moves on this day and their record remains undefeated at 2-0-1 to lead the CAYFL B Team Kitchen Division. The Generals have stepped up there play over the last few weeks and look to bring new moves to Pentucket next Sunday. Prepared by E. Pauwels B Team Report - Hamilton Wenham vs. North Reading September 24, 2006 On a warm humid day that felt more like summer than the beginning of autumn, the Hamilton-Wenham (HW) Generals - B team prepared all week to play North Reading (NR) one of the better teams in the league. The first quarter of the game started quickly for HW as tailback Trevor Lyons pick up two quick first down in 3rd and long situations, running effectively behind the wedge and moving the ball into the red-zone. With 3 minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the quarter HW ran the ball to the right side with Trevor Lyons scampering into the end zone for an 11 yard touchdown run led by key blocks from blocking back Christian Ecker and flanker Marc Pauwels completing a Generals 60 yard offensive drive. The two point conversion was unfortunately missed but the Generals took a 6-0 lead. After the ensuing kickoff from Ben Koslowski the NR offense responded with two reverse plays for long yardage gains and moved the ball to the 10 yard line. The HW defense held strong with Brad Kimball sacking the quarterback with for a 10 yard loss. Unfortunately, this play was negated by a 20 yard touchdown pass to the NR tight-end. The NR offense was unable to convert the extra point as defensive guard came up big as Peter Duval forced a fumble. At the end of the first quarter the score was 6-6. In the second quarter the General running backs Trevor Lyons, Christian Ecker, James Burr, and Dominick Pizzano ran the ball against a tough NR defensive but a fumble slowed some of the momentum. HW defense players led by Trevor Lyons and Stephen Brao applied constant pressure defense and stopped NR running attack twice on 4th down plays. At the end of a well played half the score was tied 6-6. The NR offense took over the ball in the 3rd quarter and broke through on a couple of big running reverse plays stopped for bigger gains by defensive end Ian Dickey. The momentum changed in favor of HW. With 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, defensive back Marc Pauwels intercepted a NR pass and advanced the ball to the 45 yard line. The Generals, again found it hard to run against a stingy NR defense and had to punt the ball. However, when it was the HW defense’s turn they simply would not break, with less than 1 minute in the 3rd quarter, Brad Kimball and Trevor Lyons both made key touchdown saving tackles and Marc Pauwels nearly had his second interception to stop NR from advancing the ball deeper into HW territory. Both teams battled it out in the 4th quarter despite heat and humidity. With less than 6 minutes left in the game, Trevor Lyons picked up two first downs running the ball behind great blocking from Jim McLellan, Peter Duval, Matt Vogus, Steven Brao and Brad Kimball, but a missed snap and an ensuing penalty, pushed the Generals back to midfield an out of scoring range. NR’s offense made one last push but gang tacking by line backers James McLellan and RJ Pizzano stifled the offense and forced NR to throw the second interception of the game caught by James Burr and an all pro block off the interception from Ian Dickey to help the Generals advanced to the 40 yard line. The Generals attempted one last “Hail Mary” pass to Ian Dickey which was deflected by NR’s defensive as time ran out on the clock. The final score HW 6 - NR 6 Coach Ecker commented: “Both teams played outstanding, this was as see-saw game that could have gone either way, but in the end we think this tie is as good as win, given how physical NR plays.” “We executed the wedge and ran the ball well” “I’m happy with the way the boys played today, they learned a lot about what it takes to play a very good team and compete the whole game, I’m proud of all of them,” Doug Smith Commissioner of HW Generals Youth Football said: “NR is right up there as one of the better teams in the league and we were able to execute on offense and defense. At the beginning of the season we thought we may have trouble with some of the bigger more physical teams in the league, but the way we played today demonstrated that our players are up right up there too and getting better each week!” ( Prepared by E. Pauwels)
